Design Strategy: Macro vs Micro — Which approach should be followed and when?
These days designing is not about just making a bunch of mockups and taking them to clients to get reviews. It has evolved a lot during the last decade. Now a lot of thoughts and logics play a valuable role in this field.
How do designers work today — A lot of them make good UI mocks with full functions, even crafting micro-interactions and different states of components in one go. But wait! What if client does not like the logic of your design approach. All the long hours and hard work of team members go into vain. Now the team tries to make some new options or concepts to get it approved from the client. This is horribly a waste of time and disappointing. Lots of rework.
As a UX strategist my responsibility is to make the strategy so perfect that there is no or less friction between client and our thinking. I need to make designs more fluid and adaptive initially and solidify it when validated. I have a very simple formula for it.
Macro and Mirco
Let me explain the approaches briefly. Macro approach is followed by Micro approach.
Macro Approach : In initial days of a project I use Macro vision. It is like observing something on the earth from a satellite. It gives me an exploring power and a bird eye view. I can predict better and easier results for a user.
Agile designing is the key. I want designers to make raw concepts with no interactions and no polished components at this stage. I go to the client with three and four logical design approaches. Client workshops give a lot of new inputs and new food for brainstorming. Different concepts are discussed and best fit is validated.
Micro Approach : Now comes the Micro approach into play. We have a design concept with validated logics and now it is the right time to polish components and micro-interactions for the particular design to even the tiniest details.
This is how we can save time and extra work, thus avoiding disappointment.
